Joern Keck is economist by formation and a former official of the European Commission where he had for 25 years a distinctive career as trade negotiator, in EU-Japan affairs and in industrial and single market affairs. As such he was Director for Sectoral Trade Issues and Chief Textiles Negotiator of the European Union from 1989 till 1994, Ambassador of the European Commission in Japan between 1994 and 1998, and Deputy Director-General in charge of industrial issues, single market legislation and services between 1998 and 2002. In this last function he created an internal study group on CSR issues in order to define DG Enterprise’s policy line. The Commission Green paper on CSR and the so called White Paper on the same issue, written in shared responsibility with the Directorate General for Employment and Social Affairs, were issued during this period.

Joern Keck retired in autumn 2002 and is now director of a company, which he helped to create: SA&C, Sustainability Analysis & Consulting, in Brussels
