Jay Shepherd is a senior partner of Toronto law firm Shibley RightonLLP. After receiving his LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School, andhis LLM from University of Toronto, and receiving a long list ofscholarships and awards, Mr. Shepherd published his first law book, TheLaw of Fiduciaries, in 1981. He has subsequently published anumber of other books, monographs, and papers on subjects such astaxation, fiduciaries, renewable energy, technology financing, andsocially responsible investing. As a practicing lawyer, he hasspent most of his career representing startup companies, particularlythose in the renewable energy, nanotechnology, and softwarebusinesses. He has completed more than four hundred corporatetransactions – financings, acquisitions and sales, strategicpartnerships, and funding arrangements - on behalf of thosecompanies. He is a past president of the Social InvestmentOrganization, Canada’s national association for socially responsibleinvestors, and has been or is currently a director of manyorganizations and corporations. For two years, he took a breakfrom practicing law and was CEO of a nanotechnology company and asoftware company.
