Jan Teunen

Jan Teunen was born to serve in 1950. After his education he left his homeland, the Netherlands, in 1970 in order to start his professional career at a famous German familyrun company. He left this company in 1983 as European export manager and founded, together with his wife Mieke, Design distribution company Teunen & Teunen. Because of the innovative concept of this firm, the American ID Magazine referred to him as Europe’s’ Marketing Magician. The company was sold in 1991 and the Teunen Konzepte GmbH was founded in the same year. From there on Jan Teunen acts as a Cultural Capital Producer. The Italian Architect and Designer Michele De Lucchi explains what that means: “Your profession is to help companies to cultivate themselves.”

As an independent consultant Jan Teunen serves companies such as BASF (D), circ (D), FSB (D), Grohe (D), Messe Frankfurt (D), Thonet (D + NL), Nestlé (CH), Bene (A). To bring about the balance between economic and ethical responsibilities is his passion and he is convinced that without this equilibrium corporate culture cannot come into being.

He is the editor or author / co-author of at least 20 books and numerous publications. His most recent book, Form:Ethik – Ein Brevier für Gestalter (co-author Hajo Eickhoff), was given seven awards in Germany and the United States. Currently he is working on the book Die Kunst des Unternehmens (co-author Hajo Eickhoff), that will be published by Orell Füssli Zurich (CH), beginning 2008.

He is a sought-after public speaker, and since 1992 he also delivered speeches at institutions such as the Royal College of Art / London, Rietveld Academy / Amsterdam, Bauhaus University / Weimar, Burg Giebichenstein / Halle a.d. Saale. He has been a juror in conjunction with many design competitions and he was on the Roster of Experts (Design Promotion) of ICSID. 2006 he was appointed curator by the board of Burg Giebichenstein, Hochschule für Kunst und Design / Halle a.d. Saale.

Jan Teunen is married to his wife Mieke since 1971, and together they have two children, Femke (32) and Jeroen (30). He is a keen collector of contemporary art and lives and works since 1977 at the Castle of Johannisberg in the romantic Rhine Valley. From there he also promotes and sponsors cultural activities. Most recent sponsoring activity: the Mail Art Project Draw me a Terrorist (2006) that has been curated by his son.
