Dr. Hamidul Huq is a Sociologist and Livelihoods Specialist and an NGOLeader in Bangladesh. He completed Masters in Social Welfare withhonours from University of Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1979 and obtained PhDin Rural Development Sociology with specialisation in rurallivelihoods, people’s organisation and development approaches fromWageningen University in the Netherlands in 2000. Dr. Huq has been working in NGO sector as researcher, field worker,trainer, programme manager, and Chief Executive Officer since 1979. Heis the founder and chairman of Unnayan Shahojogy Team (UST), a nationalNGO, founded in June 1986, serves more than one million rural people ofpoverty prone and river delta areas of Bangladesh. He has innovated anddeveloped model of grassroots democratic People’s Organisation of thedisadvantaged women towards their empowerment and contributesstrengthening local governance, which is crucial for sustainableinvestment. He has also developed a model of alternative appropriatemicrofinance, which is known as Shabolombee Microfinance, for the poorand poorest with the support of Rabobank Foundation. Dr. Huq played keyrole, as one of the leaders of NGO-Apex Body, in policy advocacy withthe national government and bilateral and multilateral donors. Dr. Huq is engaged in research work in the fields of livelihoods of thepoor and poorest, microfinance, coastal zone management, grassrootsgovernance, and policy advocacy. He has three publications and severalarticles. He contributes in national dailies.
