SEC Forces Funds to Disclose Proxy Votes

Jan 24, 2003, 12:28pm
A great day for SRI funds, but the rest of the industry is unenthusiastic.
The US Securities and Exchange Commission voted yesterday to adopt rule amendments that would require mutual funds and other registered management investment companies to disclose their proxy voting policies and procedures and their actual proxy votes cast.

Other CSR/SRI Conference

BEYOND SRI: RESPONSIBLE SHAREHOLDING AND LONGTERM FIDUCIARY DUTY
Monday 10 February 2003, Chatham House, London
A major international conference organized by The Royal Institute of
International Affairs in association with the Universities Superannuation Scheme Ltd
Farida Khambata (Vice President, Portfolio and Risk Management, International Finance Corporation) Stephen Timms MP (Minister for E-Commerce and Competitiveness, Department of Trade and Industry)
This event will focus on how individual investment professionals discharge their fiduciary duty to protect the long-term interest of their customers at a time of growing market volatility and short termism.
If you have a role in investment policy as a trustee, fund manager,
pension, legal or actuarial adviser, consultant or analyst, and you want to learn how you can best avoid aligning assets with potential problems and instead become a part of the solution, you should not miss this opportunity to assess for yourself the arguments in favor of a new approach in the company of peers and experts from a range of sectors. This is a rare chance for fund managers and trustees to exchange views directly in an informal environment. There is a limited number of places at very attractive rates for pension trustees - call us for details.

TBLI 2003

Brooklyn Bridge invites you to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Triple Bottom Line Investing Conference. We couldn't have done it without you! TBLI 2003 will take place on November 6-7, 2003 in Amsterdam. TBLI has grown into the largest and most important event dealing with sustainable (responsible) investment. Don't miss it.
Here is what some TBLI 2002 guests said about the conference, for complete list visit Triple Bottom Line Investing:

Thanks again, very much, for inviting me to come to your most interesting and valuable conference. I met many people with whom I share interests, and I'm hatching many new collaborations as a result. This session on Sarbanes-Oxley, in particular, was a very helpful addition to the program.
Again, my sincere gratitude for the invitation. I hope you live long and prosper--and you, too, are a mensch.

I wanted to congratulate you on an extremely successful conference. Exciting and inspiring. It gave me an extra feeling that we, at ASN Bank, were on the correct path. In addition, I found many business opportunities for the future. We will be at TBLI, next year.

It was a really worthwhile gathering. Met people I needed to see again. Met some new interesting people. And learned! Which is always a joy.

What will be different on TBLI 2003?

Location
The location this year will will be in Amsterdam and allow to us to have much larger breakout rooms, yet keep the intimacy that has been the hallmark of TBLI. We will have all the presentations, bio and photos of all the speakers on a cd-rom, at the conference. The exhibition booths will be in in the same room where refreshments are served, to allow maximum networking. The new location will offer more comfort, ventilation, space, and quiet spaces to engage in conversation or relax. We will have seating for lunch.
Content
TBLI 2003 is planning, 20 workshops (approx. 2 hours in length), which will take place over 2 days. In addition, there will be 2 TBLI Roundtable Challenges. The roundtable will bring the leading players in finance business, NGO's, trade unions, environment, policy advisors on SRI/CSR and climate change, together. It will be a dialogue between the SRI/CSR believers and skeptics. Several inspiring and visionary keynote speakers will present their ideas. There will be 3 types of workshops; active learning with maximum interaction, lectures where new research or publication will be presented, and active workshop exercise. All the workshops will be interactive, inspiring and in true TBLI fashion, a learning experience. The focus of this years event is commitment.
Due to the overwhelming success of the sector specific analyst meetings, they will be continued. Here TBL (Triple Bottom Line) analysts will meet with representatives from 4 sectors to explain how well their company is performing against a Triple Bottom Line and what will be their strategy for the coming years.
Venture Fair
Finally, sustainable venture capital projects and funds will be presented to potential investors.

BB has started the TBLI Academy that will offer in-company training to the financial sector on issues of all aspects related to socially responsible investment. Most financial institutions who have started offering SRI products, have found it increasingly difficult to gain acceptance within their organization. This dramatically slows down SRI growth. The TBLI Academy offers a program of acceptance, awareness, and action to speed the institutionalization of SRI. First program planned for March 2003. If you want to know more, contact us at academy@tbli.org.

Robert Rubinstein will be giving a talk at the World Entrepreneur Forum in Zaragosa, Spain on March 20-22. on the strategic importance of CSR/SRI.
