The Financial sector is furthest behind with some respondent believing
that they are entirely unaffected.

Does
civility matter?
Often when I return calls, I get the remark
"how good of you to call back" or "I'm happy you
returned my call".That puzzles me. I hadn't carried out a major
philanthropic activity. Some feel that a reply call is warranted
only after the initial caller has called a certain number of times.
Several attempts have been made to create a standard for determining
what is a responsible company. Pages of questionnaires, about every
possible subject (human rights, human resource management, environmental
responsibility, social responsibility, ethics, sustainable development,
social investing, etc.).
For one of the attempts I was asked to enter best practices that
I felt important to determining what is a responsible company. I
included items like civilized manners. To my surprise, several members
of the standards committee didn't understand what I was talking
about. Basic civilized behavior did not seem to be relevant. Environmental,
social and ethical accounting were very important in determining
responsible
behavior, not the behavior.
If the little things are not important then the larger things will
become less relevant. We are constantly extended the boundaries
of what is acceptable. It is imperative to focus on the "relatively
small items". These determine our values in a society, and
what is really important.
And besides all this: It's just more pleasant working with civilized
people!
