BEYOND
WAR is a U.S. public radio documentary project that asks: Is war
a necessary evil -- or is it total madness?
What must humanity do to get past this barbaric behavior?
The first one-hour production, broadcast on the "Humankind"
series hosted by David Freudberg, examines the true human costs
of war -- physically and emotionally, with remarkable comments by
paraplegic patients in a veterans hospital and the lament by historian
Howard Zinn and others that modern military technology means that
most casualties now are civilians.

Does
the golden rule work?
I have often struggled with this concept
of reciprocity vs. just sharing without expecting anything in return.
It felt fine and appropriate to assist individuals and companies
to achieve their dreams and goals. Making connections, finding investors
or job opportunities, or strategic partners was what I did and enjoyed.
Where things went wrong was when someone would call arrange a meeting
to discuss "matters of mutual benefit". So, after about
1-2 hours of filling up the other person's wheel barrow with all
their desires, we would part ways and that was it. I wouldn't hear
from that individual about how things developed until their wheel
barrow was empty. After several reoccurrences, it became clear that
the concept of sharing was not equally shared. I was only able to
pressure the other person to reciprocate, by creating a contract;"you
do this for me and I will do this for you". It achieved the
effect of motivating another to give and not only take, but it didn't
feel right. Do you have to threaten or put all acts of human kindness
in a score card or a balance sheet that must tally by the end of
the day? Isn't there over abundance of knowledge, information, resources,
love? So, why don't people just share and help. The reciprocity
does not have to be unilateral, it can come back to anyone.
I was invited to a private meeting with Mansukh Patel of the Life
Foundation. This was the first time I met him or heard him speak,
and was very impressed and inspired. What struck me the most was
the overwhelming generosity, support and help I was offered. He
and his colleagues felt they wanted to assist anyone, particularly
those struggling with the planetary condition. There was no requirement
for payment, donation, or contract before the faucet of support
was open. How refreshing, and exhilarating. Maybe I wasn't crazy.
Recently, a woman came to visit to discuss the strategic and opportunities
of her organization with respect to sustainability. She was trying
to create a new direction, for a brand that lost its way,and was
asking for help. So, I shared some insights into the endless opportunities,
directions and partners for her business. I should have been a bit
more guarded, having been used to the attitude of most "if
you give, then I will take and feel no obligation to reciprocate".
I wasn't, for some reason. She was extremely grateful and said without
hesitation. You have been so generous with your time and network.
How can I help you? That statement was my reward, and the band of
angels grew.
