Change

Sometimes we wonder if the message of TBLI is getting through. Using terms like value added non-financial risk assessment, or intangible assets and liabilities approach to investment might make the subject more palatable but does the financial sector and business, in general see the need or sense of urgency?
I have often said that pain seems to be the most effective way of getting business interested in CSR, TBLI, SRI or corporate sustainability. Often senior managers would object to the idea of pain as a tool to getting business to change. About 3 years ago, I said this at a seminar and a senior manager to a major insurance company, totally disagreed with me. "Business will embrace these concepts in due time". A year or so after our first encounter, I was moderating at another conference, and the same man from the insurance company was in the audience. He responded to my notion that business, like individuals only respond or change after the pain is substantial enough. He said" I don't like this idea that pain is what makes business change. Can't we say that the future possible period of substantial inconvenience could be effective in getting business' attention with respect to CSR and SRI". I was doubtful. A few weeks ago, I was speaking at a conference, and the same person joined my panel and said very clearly" what the insurance industry needs is a major disaster. Only then, will they wake up about the strategic importance of SRI."

Maybe the message is getting through?

Brooklyn Bridge offers an expert meeting in which future scenario’s are developed that will offer attendees the opportunity to develop new strategies for their company and identify indicators today of future environments tomorrow.

On the 9,10 & 11 of November an Expert Meeting on on The Future of Fiduciary Responsibility will take place.
Pension Funds and their fund managers have in the past been reluctant to embrace SRI, due to fiduciary responsibility. Lately, this issue has been clearly addressed by the performance of SRI funds. In addition, a new issue has arisen, namely that with social and environmental issues clearly impacts value and financial performance. A new paradigm is arising that by not embracing SRI, fund managers are not performing their fiduciary responsibility.
The Future of Fiduciary Responsibility will explore the critical uncertainties, risks and opportunities facing fiduciary responsibility. By examining these possible futures, the project will identify the implications, opportunities and risks of alternative investment strategy for pension funds and other institutional investors.

Two of the experts participating are Marnix Vriezen, CIO, Robeco and Daniel Labègue, former CEO, Caisse des Dépôts.
If you would like to register for any of the above expert meetings, or would like to receive the brochure (available from september 30) via tbli website / expertmeetings , contact expertmeeting@tbli.org
