The times they are a Changin'

Recently, I was asked to judge in the Goldman Sachs Global Social Venture Competition, involving some of the leading business schools (London Business School, Columbia, and Haas). This year, teams from North America to Kenya, India to Finland, France to Columbia and the UK to Japan submitted over 110 business plans for review in the first round, with approximately 60 plans going forward to the Semi-Final.

Most business plan competitions are focused on maximizing the return on financial investment, while this one looked specifically at the social return on investment. The winning entries clearly calculated and demonstrated the beneficial impact of their business on society as well as the shareholders.

It was extremely refreshing to see international MBA's working hard to develop businesses that created social and environmental added-value, as well as being profitable. What was particularly surprising was that the bastions of traditional business approaches were supporting and facilitating this effort. How far have we come? Now, all they have to do is start teaching sustainable finance and we will shift into overdrive.
