| Smashing Success
We are still coming off a high from the TBLI 2004
conference. It was an excellent event and very inspiring. Having
tried for many years to get the mainstream to accept the principles
of sustainability in their investment procedures, it was very rewarding
to hear David Blood's comments, former CEO of Goldman Sachs. "SRI
was the mainstream and its supporters were right all along. Long
term investments are best served by integrating sustainable performance
in the analysis". Wonderful.
I often try to encourage everyone to bring a new face
to TBLI, as was the case this year. Ewoud Goudsward of ASN Bank,
added something very important. He said, "new faces are fine,
but you shouldn't underestimate the impact that TBLI has on old
faces. There is a clear progression in acceptance and awareness,
which is now clearly bearing fruit." Excellent point.
The feedback, learning, exchanges, and inspiration
were wonderful and we are looking to our next event in November
2-4, in a new location. Thank you all who attended, and hopefully,
we will see more new and old faces at TBLI.
Brooklyn
Bridge-Angel of the Month
The winner or should I say winners of the Brooklyn Bridge Angel
of the Month are the attendees of this years' TBLI. Their joy, passion,
generosity, willingness to share and learn was remarkable. The atmosphere
was superb, and the social as well as the business networking worked
very well. A highly diverse group of individuals came together to
grow, and they did achieve that. I am extremely grateful for their
collective efforts and spirit that made it a remarkable experience
for me.
Thank
you all.

Tapping
the Financial Markets for Microfinance
A report by the Grameen Foundation
(PDF Download)
The micro-finance industry's outreach and impact on world poverty
is growing. More than 60 million poor families are now participating
with a micro-finance institution; the estimated world portfolio
is valued in the billions, and industry growth has averaged 30%
a year. The estimated capital requirements are billions more than
the current supply that historical donor funding can fulfill. Therefore,
the question of leveraging scarce philanthropic resources to attract
much larger amounts of commercial capital becomes critical. This
paper presents an excellent overview of an emerging, and profitable,
financial service.

| Congratulations
to the 2004 TBLI Award winner, the Rainforest Action Network!
Rainforest Action Network
The Rainforest Action Network (RAN) was highly instrumental
in pressuring banks to create the Equator Principles. This requires
the signatories to adhere to social and environmental impact studies
before providing project financing to a project in developing markets.
Rainforest Action Network was awarded a Euro 5000 prize to direct
towards their continuing efforts.
We would also like to thank this year's nominees, VBDO and
UKSIF, for their hard work in advancing the principles of sustainable
investment.
VBDO
This is a foundation that works towards a sustainable society by
focusing on the corporate world, in particular, the financial sector.
They have been pushing SRI among institutional investors and have
several large pension funds that are members. It is a network and
government lobbyist organization.
UKSIF
This is the oldest and largest network organization dealing explicitly
with promoting SRI on the institutional and retail level. They have
also been active in lobbying the UK government to further SRI.
The winner was announced at the gala dinner of the TBLI
Conference 2004 on Thursday, 11 November.
