The Tipping Point
I am quite excited about this year. So many things
are converging to create a force or tipping point, that might push
tbli through. The European Trading Scheme has started as of January
1st. Carbon is finally becoming a cost for business. After three
years of consultation the International Interfaith Investment Group
is being launched in April. A significant number of initiatives
by private banks and other groups will introduce tbli to high net
worth investors. It is the year of micro financing, with significant
money flows and programs starting. The Enhanced Analytics Initiative
gets into full swing, which will work to get analysts to make so
called "non-financial" issues part of the analysis. Sustainable
private equity or cleantech private equity is rapidly accumulating
significant investment. There are literally too many developments
to mention. I almost forgot the obvious.
Yesterday, I was talking to a friend about working together in the
SME sector, and I showed him the Brooklyn Bridge presentation. His
reaction was not what I normally get. It was rather odd. We have
been beaten the drums and praises of TBLI and trying for a long
time to raise awareness of companies of their self interests in
embracing sustainability. What I forgot was that there were many
companies who didn't understand the reason for having to convince
someone about sustainability. Jos, my friend, looked perplexed,
and said "this is just normal business". Yes, it is. The
obvious is often overlooked, and we forget that many companies do
"get it".
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Brooklyn
Bridge-Angel of the Month
Michael Braungarten is our angel of the month. Michael has been
working tirelessly in institutionalizing sustainable business practices,
for a very long time. A chemist by background, he helped develop
the Hanover principles, and many new service and products that worked
toward fully integrating the concept of technical nutrients as a
service. The book, Cradle to Cradle, he wrote with Bill McDonough
is a classic. At TBLI 2003, he launched the idea of Triple Top Line
Investment, and criticized the notion of eco-efficiency. He said,
and I paraphrase" Going in the wrong direction slower, is not
progress". His work is not the reason he is receiving this
recognition. The reason we chose Michael is because he does exactly
what he says. Constantly generous with his time, and network. He
constantly tries to link his network to ours and make introductions
to people who can help us and who are inspirational. As busy as
he is, he will always find the time to help. One of the most important
criteria for an Brooklyn Bridge Angel of the Month is the concept
of sharing. Michael needs no explanation about this.
Congratulations.

before it is recognized In the first it is ridiculed, in the second
it is opposed, in the third it is regarded as self-evident"
